Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

This morning as I snuggled up on the couch with Baby J to watch Macy's Parade on his first Thanksgiving, I got to wondering about when it all began.  So, here are a few fun facts about the parade.

  • The first parade was held in 1924 and featured animals from the Central Park Zoo!
  • Helium Balloons were first introduced to the parade in 1927. They were released at the end of the parade with gift certificates for the person who found them, but they unexpectedly burst once they reached the skyline.
  • Mickey Mouse made his first appearance in 1934

  • The parade was televised nationally for the first time in 1947.
  • In 1957 a downpour filled the hat on Popeye's balloon with gallons of water. It caused him to veer off course and dump water on surprised spectators!
  • The parade floats are designed in an old tootsie roll factory in  Hoboken, NJ.
