Birthday Shirt

Last year for Baby J's first, birthday I made him a shirt with a great big one made out of bandana material.

It turned out so cute I decided to try I again this year. My sewing skills are still pretty basic, but I think I did a pretty good job!  I'm sure in about 16 years he'll look back at pictures and think his mom dressed him like a nerd. But that's ok because right now I think he's pretty cute!

Hi

Hello everyone! I hope y'all are having a great week. I am.

Things here have been busy.  Usually after harvest it's time to play catch up.  I fortunately don't have a huge role in harvest like some women.  I am strictly moral support and food provider.  But things still get let go, like mowing the yard, cleaning the kitchen or keeping the dust out of the car!  But this year, I  think I have done a great job staying caught up.  My garden seems to be what has suffered the most.  Baby J hasn't minded the extra work I've had to put in in the garden the last few days, to him it just means he gets to play in the sprinkler!

Everything in my garden is doing wonderful!  My potatoes are ready to dig and my onions are not far behind. My zucchini, squash and pumpkins are off to a slow start but I think they will catch up before too long.

This Friday my baby is going to turn two! I can't believe it is already here.  It has been way too fast.  I am going to give him a puppy theme party.  So far I have made him a birthday shirt, invitations and a few decorations. I will take pictures and show you later this week.  This year I am going to attempt a dog cake! Wish me luck!

Well, that's all for now,
Love, the Farmer's Wife

It's Over!

1.  Harvest is over!  Yay!  Well, it was actually over on Saturday, but I'm so excited that it's over I'm still celebrating today.

2.  The guys had three breakdowns this year. I think they were they we're the worst breakdowns we've had since I've been in the family!  We started cutting two Mondays ago, and everything was going smooth, then last Monday we had our first big problem and it took two days to fix. They had to gut the combine to get to the part that malfunctioned. After that everything kinda went downhill. As LB said "it took the fun out of cuttin' wheat"

3.  I didn't take very many pictures this year.  I'm not sure why, maybe because I spent most of my time in the field keeping track of a very curious little boy or feeding the guys.

4.  I'm glad harvest is over, mostly because I know how hard the boys had to work to get everything cut this time.  I was worn out for them!

Give me a couple of weeks and I'll be ready for next year!

What Happens Next...

I don't think I have ever taken the time to tell y'all what happens after we get the wheat out of the field...
Once the truck is loaded with wheat, we take it to the Elevators.

The truck is then driven onto the scales and weighed and then a sample of the wheat is taken.

The truck is weighed because wheat is sold by the bushel and each bushel weighs differently according to the grade of the wheat.  That is why a sample is taken.  Each sample taken is tested for moisture, foreign material(weed seeds),  and quality.

The wheat is then dumped from the hopper on the bottom of the truck into a pit where it will be augured into one of the elevators.

Once the wheat is sold to the elevators, they then will transfer the wheat to rail cars that will haul the grain to processing plants, exported, or mills to be made into flour.

So, the next time you bake a cake or eat a sandwich, just think....this could be some of the Jones' wheat!!

Stuff

1.). We got rain!  Yay! We are still in desperate need of moisture, so the 1 1/2 inch we got Sunday night was wonderful!!

2.)  Harvest came to a screeching halt Sunday night due to the rain.  So yesterday everyone had a day off.  Well, a day off from cutting wheat. When you farm the are always chores no matter what is going on!

3.)  Baby J will be to next week! It's almost hard to believe that he is that old. It has just flown by I'm excited to celebrate his birthday (it is going to be a puppy theme) but I'm sad because he will never be one again.

4.) I am really tired. So this is all you get tonight.  Sorry, but I think it's always best to be honest!

Goodnight

Psalm 119:11

Supper In The Field

This is what we use to eat supper in the field.

Stainless steel stacking plates.

It works quiet nicely.

Each plate is filled with a generous helping for each person and the stacking and the fact that it's metal keeps it warm.

Extra plates are filled with rolls, desserts, silverware, anything you might need.  I also carry a Pyrex take along bag filled with paper plates, cups, salt and pepper, silverware, wash rags...

It's amazing how much you can end up taking with you!

Then you sit in the shade of the truck and dig in!  I was too busy eating to get any pictures.

Wheat Harvest

It's here!

Hey good lookin'!

Please don't run over me!

He didn't run over me, but he did dust me!

Baby J loves cutting wheat!  He has cried every night when he had to get off the combine.

Happy Cuttin'

How To Build A Bed - Pt. 3

Well, it's finished!

And just in time too,

we started cutting wheat yesterday!

I think they did a great job!  I'm so proud of them!

It'll be the slickest truck on the road!

OK, so....

I fell asleep on the couch on Sunday night waiting for the Internet page to load; By the time I woke up it was late.  Too late!  So I never posted the verse I had picked out. I'll save it for next Sunday.

The wind blew like crazy this weekend!  It was miserably windy, but it was great for our wheat. The wind dried the rain soaked wheat so we are now in the field!  We rolled the combine out this afternoon and fired her up!  Yay! My favorite time of year is here!!

Well, actually it's my second favorite time of year.  Christmas is my first!

Today' BIG Event

Today was fun today was great
I sold my skate and his mate
At a sale in my garage
I think I now need a massage!

My friends and I
We battled the wind
On our prices
we did bend!

We made a dollar
And a few nickels
We took a break
And ate some pickles!

Then we wheeled and dealed
Still battling the wind
And happily our merchandise
Slowly thinned!

And then at three
We pulled down the door
Our old clothes and dishes
To see no more!

We were tired but happy
Our pocketbooks thicker
And our wind blown hair
Made us all snicker

We'll sleep good tonight
And I hope you will too
With lots of sweet dreams
To carry you through!

My Heart Has Been Broken

About two seconds before this picture was taken, Baby J broke my heart!

As soon as I handed him up to LB, he turned around and said:
No, No!  You stay here, Mommy!  Bye Bye!

What am I going to do?  He's too little to not need me!

My heart is broken, my life will never be the same!

Haulin' Hay

Taking Baby J to do farm work, is lots more fun the older he gets!  Every time we picked up a hay bale, he would say:  Up! Up! Up!

Here we go...

Up!

Up!

Up!

This year, some of the hay we cut was close to where it is to be stored until needed.  So, instead of using a hay trailer, we just moved the bales with our pick-ups.

Down!

Down!

Down!

Bump!

Peppers and Tomatoes

Peppers!  We have about three different types of peppers this year.  We are a little slow on getting our garden planted, but everything is coming along nicely despite the fact.

I didn't have very good luck with my tomatoes last year, so I decided to only do two plants until I get the tomatoes figured out.  I think the sunflowers I planted will help with the tomatoes by providing some shade.

Baby J keeps wanting to pull the cans up.  I have a couple of peppers who suffered from his curiosity!

My mouth is watering just thinking about all the salsa I could make!

Yum!

Job 2:10b

10b. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

~Job 2:10b KJV

I don't usually give any commentary on the verses I post, but I have a small comment...You have to be willing to take the good with the bad. The bad makes the good that much sweeter!

Wildfire by Zane Grey

So, I have a soft spot for westerns.

I honestly would read one of these over any of the classics any day!

I have several Zane Grey books, and have read this one more than once.  It's one of my favorites and being the horse lover I am, can easily get lost in this story.  If you are up for a good western, you should check out any one of his books.  I know you'll love them!
